India Bans Land Imports of Jute Products from Bangladesh

India has banned imports of specific jute products and ropes from Bangladesh via land routes due to deteriorating bilateral relations, allowing imports only through the Nhava Sheva Seaport. This follows earlier restrictions on various jute items, stemming from controversial remarks made by Bangladesh’s interim government head Muhammad Yunus, which sparked backlash in India. The trade dynamic is crucial, as Bangladesh poses a significant competitive threat in the textile sector, with bilateral trade amounting to USD 12.9 billion in 2023-24. These measures reflect India’s strategic approach to safeguard its domestic industry and address geopolitical tensions with Bangladesh.
