Indian Navy prefers German AIP subs over French Scorpenes for enhanced IOR capabilities.
The Indian Navy is reconsidering its submarine acquisition strategy, favoring the procurement of six advanced German-designed stealth submarines equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology over three additional French Scorpene-class submarines. This shift aims to enhance India’s underwater combat capabilities in response to increasing naval threats in the Indian Ocean Region, particularly from China and Pakistan. The proposed Project 75-India (P-75I) will involve the construction of these submarines at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, emphasizing technology transfer and indigenization. While the project could bolster India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem and create jobs, concerns about potential delays echo past experiences, underscoring the critical need for timely execution to maintain naval readiness and strategic deterrence.
