NIOT to Launch India's Deep-Sea Microbial Repository in Andhra Pradesh

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is establishing India’s Deep-Sea Marine Microbial Repository at its seafront campus in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, as part of the Deep Ocean Mission. This facility will focus on isolating, culturing, and characterizing microorganisms from extreme marine environments, with significant applications in biomedical, industrial, and environmental technologies. NIOT’s initiatives have already led to discoveries, such as a strain of Bacillus clausii with UV-protection properties and a bacterium capable of degrading oil pollutants, showcasing India’s growing expertise in marine biotechnology. The repository aims to foster collaboration between scientific institutions and the biotech sector, positioning India among a select group of nations with dedicated facilities for marine microbial research, which is crucial for advancing the blue economy and addressing global environmental challenges.
