Indian Army retains Animal Transport Units for essential logistical support until 2032.

The Indian Army has decided to defer the disbanding of its Animal Transport Units (ATUs) until at least 2032 due to the ongoing necessity for logistical support in high-altitude and challenging terrains. Despite earlier proposals to phase out these units based on advancements in technology and infrastructure, the required developments did not materialize, underscoring the critical role of mules, horses, donkeys, and dogs in maintaining operational readiness in forward areas. This decision follows recommendations from a 2016 Committee of Experts aimed at enhancing combat capability and optimizing defense spending. The continuation of ATUs highlights the importance of traditional logistical methods in complementing modern military operations.
