India is taking a proactive approach to artificial intelligence governance by adapting existing legal frameworks, notably the IT Act 2000 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, to address the complexities introduced by AI technologies. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has emphasized the importance of fostering innovation while simultaneously managing potential risks associated with AI, such as algorithmic bias and data privacy issues. IT Secretary S Krishnan articulated that the government’s current focus is on encouraging innovation in the AI sector, with regulatory measures to be introduced only as necessary. The recently released IndiaAI governance guidelines recommend a human-centric approach, comprising principles like trust, accountability, and fairness, while advocating for the establishment of governance institutions and the development of an India-specific AI framework. This adaptive governance strategy not only aims to protect users from potential harm but also seeks to position India as a key player in the global AI landscape. The emphasis on iterative, responsive oversight reflects a balanced approach that could serve as a model for international AI policy, showcasing India’s commitment to leveraging technology for the greater public good while maintaining a robust digital start-up ecosystem.
