Oil India uncovers natural gas reserves off Andaman Islands

Oil India has discovered natural gas reserves off the Andaman Islands, marking a significant milestone in India’s hydrocarbon exploration efforts. The discovery was made in the offshore block AN-OSHP-2018/1, with preliminary tests confirming the presence of gas, primarily methane, at a depth of approximately 2,650 meters. This find aligns with India’s strategic objective to reduce its substantial dependence on imported oil and gas, currently at 88% and 50% respectively. As Oil India and ONGC continue to explore the Andaman Sea, this discovery could potentially open avenues for further hydrocarbon development in the region, reminiscent of significant oil fields in Guyana, and bolster India’s energy security in the long term.
