Indian refiners, SCI pursue joint shipbuilding venture with Korea.

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), alongside major public sector oil refiners, is negotiating with South Korean shipbuilders to establish a joint shipbuilding facility in India, potentially located in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative aims to enhance India’s energy security by reducing reliance on foreign-chartered vessels, with Indian refiners needing approximately 112 ships over the next decade. The push for domestic shipbuilding aligns with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030, which seeks to elevate the country’s shipbuilding capacity from below 1% to a significant portion of global production, thereby fostering self-sufficiency and economic stability in energy transport amidst global supply chain challenges.
