Indian Navy to test endurance of advanced Varunastra torpedo.
The Indian Navy is set to conduct endurance tests for the Varunastra, an advanced heavyweight torpedo named after the sea god in Hindu mythology. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and inducted in 2016, this electrically propelled torpedo can engage submarines at depths of up to 600 metres while travelling between 40 and 50 knots over a range of approximately 40 kilometres. As part of India’s strategic efforts to bolster its underwater warfare capabilities, the Varunastra reflects a significant advancement in indigenous defense technology, enhancing the Navy’s operational readiness. The ongoing development to extend its range further underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime defense posture in an increasingly competitive regional security environment.
