Graphite's rise in the US highlights India's key export role in EVs.
Graphite has emerged as a critical mineral due to its essential role in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and renewable energy storage, prompting renewed mining initiatives in the US aimed at reducing dependence on Chinese imports. India, equipped with commercially viable graphite reserves and an established manufacturing base, is positioned as a key exporter; in 2023, it exported approximately $24.3 million worth of artificial graphite to the US, which accounted for 41% of total exports. The US government’s tariff concessions for Indian graphite and its strategic focus on securing critical mineral supplies underscore the growing importance of India in the global graphite market. As the demand for EVs accelerates, India’s role as an emerging exporter could significantly influence supply chains and geopolitical dynamics.
