MiG-21 Retirement: Celebrating Women Pilots' Trailblazing Journey

The retirement of the MiG-21 Bison marks a significant moment in the Indian Air Force’s history, especially as it was the first fighter jet flown by women pilots. Squadron Leader Priya Sharma led the final flypast, symbolizing the groundbreaking achievements of female aviators who transitioned from the MiG-21 to advanced aircraft like the Rafale and Su-30MKI. Key figures such as Squadron Leaders Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth, and Mohana Singh Jitarwal, who were the first women inducted into the fighter stream in 2016, have showcased remarkable skill and determination, shattering gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. This transition not only highlights the IAF’s commitment to gender equality but also reflects India’s progressive stance on women’s roles in defense, underscoring the importance of inclusivity in strengthening national security.
