Indian Army Suspends Leave for Gorkha Troops Amid Nepal Unrest
The Indian Army has temporarily withheld annual leave for its Nepal-origin Gorkha soldiers amid rising unrest in Nepal, conducting checks to ensure the safety of those already on leave there. All Gorkha soldiers are confirmed to be safe, and while leaves have been delayed, they have not been canceled. The Indian Army has 35 battalions of Gorkha Regiment, with around 30,000 Nepalese Gorkhas serving, although no direct recruitment from Nepal has taken place since 2020 due to the pandemic. This measure reflects the Army’s commitment to operational readiness and the well-being of its personnel in light of regional instability.
