Defence Minister Calls for Advanced Indigenous Maritime Security Strategy
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the 42nd Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders Conference in New Delhi, emphasizing the force’s pivotal role in safeguarding India’s extensive coastline and island territories amidst evolving maritime security challenges. He highlighted the growing complexities of maritime threats, including illegal fishing, drug trafficking, and cyber warfare, underscoring the need for advanced technology and continuous adaptation to ensure swift responses to external developments, particularly from regional instability in neighboring countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh. Singh also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to indigenization, with nearly 90% of the ICG’s capital budget allocated to indigenous assets, enhancing operational capabilities while boosting India’s shipbuilding sector. He emphasized that maritime security is intrinsically linked to India’s economic well-being, cautioning that disruptions in maritime trade could have cascading effects on national security. This comprehensive approach highlights the necessity for the ICG to maintain geopolitical awareness and readiness, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and automated surveillance to effectively counter evolving threats, thereby ensuring a secure and self-reliant India in the face of multifaceted challenges.
