Transforming Indian Navy's LPDs into UAV Carriers for Enhanced IOR Operations

The Indian Navy’s plan to convert its four planned Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) into Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) carriers is a strategic move aimed at enhancing its operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This transformation would allow for persistent Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations and strike flexibility while reducing reliance on manned aircraft, thus optimizing costs and operational efficiency. By integrating UAVs with existing manned assets like the MiG-29K and Rafale-M, India could significantly bolster its maritime security against regional threats, particularly from China’s expanding naval presence. This approach not only aligns with India’s self-reliance goals but also facilitates increased interoperability with allied navies, reinforcing strategic partnerships in the IOR.
