Indian Navy to Equip Future Warships with Electromagnetic Railguns
The Indian Navy is accelerating efforts to equip its future warships with electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) systems, a technology being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with both Defence Public Sector Undertakings and private Indian companies. Notable progress includes the inauguration of the Centre for Electromagnetic Launch Technology (CEMaLT) in May 2025, established to drive advanced research and indigenize key sub-technologies such as pulse power supplies, barrel construction, and thermal management systems. The DRDO’s Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) has developed compact EMRG prototypes, showcased at Aero India 2025, and is preparing for field trials of a version capable of firing projectiles at speeds exceeding 2,000m/s using a modular capacitor bank and lithium-based battery. Enhanced rail life and rapid recharge capability represent significant technical milestones, while partnerships with private industry under technology transfer programs pave the way for production scalability. This indigenous development, a central pillar of India’s self-reliance vision, aims to provide the Navy with advanced shipborne strike and defensive capabilities to counter emerging threats in the Indian Ocean Region, particularly with growing Chinese naval advances.
