India Plans to Buy 200-400 R-37M Missiles for Su-30MKI.

India is in advanced talks with Russia to procure 200-400 R-37M hypersonic air-to-air missiles to enhance the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fleet’s beyond-visual-range strike capabilities. The R-37M, with a range exceeding 300 km and speeds up to Mach 6, is capable of targeting high-value aerial assets like AWACS and tanker aircraft, providing a critical edge against regional adversaries. Russia has offered the missile along with proposals for local production under India’s “Make in India” initiative, potentially involving Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for integration and manufacturing. These discussions, led by senior defense officials, align with India’s strategic aim to maintain air superiority amid growing threats from Pakistan and China. Radar and avionics upgrades on Su-30MKI are necessary to fully utilize the missile’s capabilities. The planned procurement is part of a broader defense modernization drive, including other key acquisitions approved in October 2025. President Putin’s forthcoming visit to India is expected to expedite final deal formalities.
