Indian Navy Receives 'Ikshak', Enhancing Survey Capabilities
The Indian Navy has received ‘Ikshak’ (Yard 3027), the third of four large Survey Vessels (SVL), delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. This ship, which enhances India’s hydrographic survey capabilities, is designed to conduct coastal and deep-water surveys and gather oceanographic and geophysical data for both defense and civil applications. Weighing approximately 3,400 tons and measuring 110 meters in length, Ikshak features state-of-the-art hydrographic equipment and has an indigenous content exceeding 80%, showcasing India’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The vessel is notable for being the first SVL ship to provide accommodation for women officers and sailors, reflecting inclusivity within the Indian Navy. The delivery of Ikshak underscores the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, MSMEs, and the Indian defense industry in strengthening maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region, further solidifying India’s strategic posture in maritime security and economic interests. The successful launch of the SVL program is an important milestone in enhancing the Indian Navy’s operational readiness and capabilities, which are vital for safeguarding national interests in increasingly contested waters.
