HAL Chief: Software Issues Delayed Astra Mk1 Test on Tejas Mk1A
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman Dr. D.K. Sunil revealed that software glitches were responsible for the Astra Mk1 missile test failure from the Tejas Mk1A in March 2025, which is critical for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) modernization. The failed test was attributed to challenges in integrating the ELTA Systems EL/M-2052 AESA radar with the missile system, necessitating a retest scheduled for September 2025. HAL aims to resolve these integration issues ahead of deliveries, targeting 12 Mk1A jets by March 2026, with plans to ramp up production. This situation underscores the complexities of developing a robust indigenous defense system, which is vital for India’s strategic autonomy and operational readiness.
