DRDO Accelerates Indigenous Turret Development for Zorawar Tank
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is expediting the development of an indigenous turret for the Zorawar Light Tank, aimed for completion within two years to replace the Belgian-sourced turret currently in use. This initiative, in collaboration with the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment and Larsen & Toubro, aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to enhance self-reliance in defense amid rising border tensions. The new turret is designed to improve the tank’s lethality against various threats, including aerial targets, while potentially fostering synergies with private sector endeavors, such as those from the Kalyani Group. The Zorawar’s evolution is critical as it addresses the operational challenges posed by the unique demands of high-altitude warfare, marking a significant step in India’s armored modernization efforts.
