India’s Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) are set to be equipped with advanced four-panel X-Band Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Multi-Function Radars, specifically tailored for the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) system, as confirmed in the Ministry of Defence’s Annual Report for FY 2024-25 released on 10 Nov 2025. Production of these radars has commenced at Bharat Electronics Limited following successful developmental trials in 2024, marking a major leap in indigenous naval air defense. The integration of these radars will enhance the NGMVs’ ability to counter aerial threats, supporting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and strengthening maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region. The rollout is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full-scale deployment planned for major surface combatants by 2035.
