DRDO unveils advanced Man-portable AUVs for mine countermeasures.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed a new generation of Man-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (MP-AUVs) intended for mine countermeasure missions. These advanced AUVs, created by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam, feature Side Scan Sonar and underwater cameras for real-time detection and classification of mine-like objects, alongside deep learning algorithms for autonomous classification. Recent field trials have confirmed the system’s critical operational parameters, paving the way for production in the coming months. This innovation is poised to enhance the Indian Navy’s mine warfare capabilities, enabling rapid response with reduced operational risks and a smaller logistical footprint.
