Indian Army and IAF to Procure 200 Light Helicopters for Upgrade

The Indian Army and Air Force are set to procure 200 light helicopters to replace their ageing Chetak and Cheetah fleets, with 120 for the Army and 80 for the Air Force, enhancing reconnaissance and multi-role capabilities. This initiative aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat strategy, promoting indigenous defense manufacturing and fostering partnerships with global OEMs. The effort comes alongside the approval of 156 Light Combat Helicopters from HAL, aimed at bolstering border security. While the indigenous Light Utility Helicopter faces production challenges, leasing options are being considered to meet immediate needs, highlighting a strategic push for modernization and self-reliance in defense.
