India explores Kaveri engine tests on Su-30MKI, inspired by F-22 strategy.
India’s Kaveri engine program is set to undergo risky testing on the Su-30MKI, inspired by the U.S. F-22 strategy of validating engines extensively before integration. The Kaveri GTX-35VS has lower thrust compared to the Su-30MKI’s AL-31FP, posing challenges for integration due to differing performance profiles. Despite these hurdles, the Su-30’s twin-engine design provides a safer testing environment. This initiative carries political significance as India seeks indigenous alternatives amid Russian supply issues. While the Kaveri may not replace the AL-31FP operationally, testing will yield critical data, aiding future programs like AMCA and the Ghatak UAV, and support India’s long-term goal of self-reliance in jet engine technology.
