Terrorism and Counterterrorism

UK sanctions target Khalistan finances, bolstering India's security efforts.

The UK government has taken a significant step in combating pro-Khalistan terrorism by sanctioning British Sikh businessman Gurpreet Singh Rehal and the group Babbar Akali Lehar, under its Domestic Counter-Terrorism Regime. This unprecedented action, following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer, aims to disrupt the financial networks supporting the Khalistan movement, a long-standing concern for India. The sanctions include an asset freeze and director disqualification for Rehal, who is linked to organizations allegedly involved in recruiting and financing terrorism in India. The UK Treasury’s commitment to thwarting terrorist financing reflects a broader strategy to protect national security and uphold community safety, emphasizing that those exploiting the financial system for extremist activities will face strict repercussions. This crackdown is expected to significantly weaken the Khalistani movements by choking their financial resources, thereby enhancing India’s security posture in the region.
