Terrorism and Counterterrorism

Two soldiers missing in J&K anti-terror operation; search hindered by severe weather.

Two soldiers from an elite para unit of the Indian Army went missing during an anti-terrorist operation in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, on the night of October 6. The soldiers lost communication with their team amid severe snowstorms and whiteout conditions prevalent in the higher reaches of the Kishtwar range, hampering their search and rescue efforts. A massive search operation has been launched, involving helicopters and ground troops from the Army, local police, and other security forces, who are combing the dense forest areas in an attempt to locate the missing personnel. The operation is part of ongoing aggressive measures by Indian security agencies to dismantle the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, which includes targeting terrorists, their overground workers, and the networks supporting them through illicit activities such as drug smuggling. This incident underscores the challenges faced by the Indian armed forces while conducting operations in harsh terrains and adverse weather conditions, revealing the resilience and commitment of the security forces in their mission to ensure peace and stability in the region. It also highlights the broader context of counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir, where local conditions often complicate operations, necessitating robust strategies and coordination among various security agencies to effectively combat terrorism.
