Pune techie arrested for alleged Al Qaeda ties and youth radicalisation efforts.
In a recent development, Maharashtra ATS arrested a Pune-based software engineer, Zubair Hangargekar, for suspected Al Qaeda links and involvement in youth radicalisation efforts. The arrest took place on October 27, 2025, after authorities recovered incriminating materials, including literature related to Al Qaeda, from his residence. The investigation revealed Hangargekar’s possession of digital devices, including 19 laptops and 40 mobile phones, which are undergoing forensic analysis to establish connections with terror networks and potential plans for attacks. Hangargekar was reportedly in contact with individuals linked to extremist ideologies, and authorities suspect he was part of a broader online radicalisation module operating in Maharashtra. This crackdown follows recent raids in Pune linked to an active online jihadist resurgence, with India experiencing an increase in terror activities from groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda, despite their territorial defeats abroad. The incident underscores India’s ongoing efforts to counter online radicalisation and prevent terror plots amid a complex threat landscape.
