Islamic State and Al-Qaeda have intensified their propaganda efforts in India by leveraging translations into regional languages, with IS’s Al-Isabah Foundation and Al-Qaeda’s Al-Kifah media establishing dedicated translation centers since early 2024. This strategy targets diverse populations, particularly in South India, using materials in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and others to exploit local tensions and recruit sympathizers. The surge in vernacular content, noted after Bangladesh’s political upheaval in August 2024, has heightened challenges for Indian counter-terrorism agencies, prompting enhanced monitoring of online platforms and calls for stronger community-based counter-narratives as of August 2025.
