Trump Threatens India with Tariffs Over Russian Oil Purchases

On August 5, 2025, President Trump renewed threats to sharply raise US tariffs on Indian goods in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, accusing New Delhi of fueling the Ukraine conflict and profiting from resales. Trump’s announcement follows a previous imposition of a 25% tariff set to take effect August 7. India immediately condemned the move as unjustified, with officials highlighting Western double standards for criticizing India while maintaining their own trade links with Russia. India asserted its sovereign right to make energy decisions based on affordability and market needs, noting Russian oil comprised nearly 40% of its imports in 2025. The dispute escalates economic tensions and raises concerns about higher oil prices and disrupted US-India trade.
