Sonam Wangchuk detained under NSA for inciting violence in Ladakh

The Ladakh administration has detained climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA), citing his provocative speeches that allegedly incited violence, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries during protests in Leh. The administration emphasized that Wangchuk’s actions, including references to political agitations, were detrimental to public order and security, necessitating his removal to Jodhpur prison to restore normalcy. Despite prior dialogue opportunities with the government regarding demands for statehood and constitutional provisions, Wangchuk’s hunger strike continued, prompting this decisive action. This incident underscores ongoing tensions in Ladakh, highlighting the delicate balance between activism and maintaining public order in a region with significant geopolitical importance.
