Sodium-ion batteries present a strategic opportunity for India's energy sector, says ex-DRDO chief.
On December 11, 2025, in Hyderabad, Naxion Energy launched India’s first sodium-ion energy storage systems in 3.5 kW, 5 kW, and 10 kW models, designed and manufactured at its Coimbatore facility for residential, commercial, industrial, and defence sectors. Former DRDO Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy, chief guest at the event, emphasized sodium-ion batteries as a strategic opportunity for India’s energy sector, leveraging abundant domestic sodium resources to bypass lithium import dependencies and enable scalable, low-cost manufacturing. He urged Indian industries to accelerate cell production, noting advantages like safety, non-flammability, maintenance-free operation, and resilience in extreme climates from -30°C to +70°C, positioning the technology as a reliable alternative to lead-acid and lithium systems for energy security and self-reliance. Naxion plans a ₹200 crore Hyderabad manufacturing facility by next year to meet rising demand.
