Rajnath Singh launches solar-hydrogen microgrid in Ladakh to enhance energy security.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated a pioneering solar-hydrogen-based microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh, developed jointly by NTPC and the Indian Army. This 3.7 MW solar plant is part of an innovative energy storage system designed to provide continuous clean energy to high-altitude defence posts, significantly reducing reliance on diesel generators. The project, completed in just eight months despite the challenging terrain, features a hydrogen generation system, storage capabilities, and a battery energy storage system, ensuring reliable power supply year-round. By facilitating local production of green energy, the microgrid is set to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and mitigate logistical challenges associated with fuel transportation in remote regions, marking a substantial advance towards decarbonising the defence sector in high-altitude environments. This initiative not only underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions but also reinforces the operational capabilities of its armed forces in challenging climates.
