PIB Debunks Deepfake Video Misattributing Wangchuk's Arrest
A viral video alleging that Ladakh’s Director General of Police, Dr. S.D. Singh, claimed activist Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest was ordered by the Defence Minister has been debunked as a deepfake by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The PIB clarified that Dr. Singh made no such statement, urging the public to be cautious of misleading AI-generated content. Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act following violent protests in Leh on September 24, where demands for Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh resulted in four fatalities and numerous injuries. The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) stated that Wangchuk’s actions were detrimental to state security and public order, prompting his transfer to a prison in Jodhpur to ensure regional stability. This incident underscores the challenges posed by misinformation amid regional unrest and the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in Ladakh. The PIB’s intervention highlights the need for vigilance against digital misinformation, particularly in sensitive geopolitical contexts, emphasizing the importance of verifying sources before sharing information.
