Nuclear Sector Reforms: AEC Chairman Advocates Private Involvement

India is making significant strides in its nuclear energy sector, with Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Ajit Kumar Mohanty announcing a target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. Currently operating 24 reactors with an installed capacity of 8,190 MWe, India aims to increase this to 22 GW by 2032 through a strategy that emphasizes policy reforms, public-private partnerships, and indigenous technology. The government has allocated over USD 2 billion for research on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and plans to deploy at least five by 2033. Notably, the shift to include private players in the nuclear sector marks a pivotal reform, enhancing capacity growth while ensuring adherence to safety standards and international regulations, reinforcing India’s commitment to a robust nuclear safety regime.
