Mizoram starts biometric data collection for Myanmar, Bangladeshi refugees
The Mizoram government has commenced the collection of biometric and biographic data for refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh, as directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This initiative aims to document around 33,000 Myanmar refugees and over 2,370 Bangladeshi refugees currently residing in the state, particularly in the Champhai and Lunglei districts. The effort follows a military coup in Myanmar and heightened ethnic tensions in Bangladesh, prompting many to seek shelter in Mizoram, which shares extensive borders with both countries. This data collection underscores India’s commitment to managing refugee inflow while addressing regional stability and security concerns.
