Leh airport faces safety concerns from stray dogs and bird strikes.

Concerns regarding runway safety at Leh airport have escalated due to the dual threats of bird strikes and stray dog incursions, prompting the Indian Air Force (IAF) and civil flight operators to advocate for immediate measures, including the installation of bird spikes and improved waste management strategies. During a recent meeting chaired by Additional District Development Commissioner Sonam Nurboo, IAF officials emphasized the correlation between garbage accumulation and increased bird activity, stressing the need to eliminate open dumping sites. Additionally, the rising population of stray dogs has led to repeated runway incursions, highlighting the urgency for coordinated action among all stakeholders to enhance safety and operational protocols. Effective resolution of these issues is crucial for maintaining safe aircraft operations in this strategically vital region.
