Kerala plans thorium power plant, dismisses conventional nuclear energy
Kerala’s Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty announced plans to explore a thorium-based power plant, emphasizing its waste-free and environment-friendly benefits over conventional nuclear energy, which the state has ruled out. He highlighted that Kerala possesses sufficient thorium reserves for 200 years and stated that energy security remains a priority, free from political considerations. While thorium is recognized as a promising alternative fuel, experts note that no commercial thorium power plants are currently operational globally. India’s ongoing investments in research reactors demonstrate a commitment to developing thorium energy as a viable source for the future.
