India Targets 100 GW Nuclear Capacity, Plans SMRs for Remote Areas
India is ambitiously expanding its nuclear capabilities, targeting a total capacity of over 22GW by 2031 through the addition of 18 new reactors and the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is developing three SMR models aimed at enhancing energy production and hydrogen generation, particularly for off-grid remote areas and repurposing fossil-fuel sites. The government is fostering private and foreign investment in the sector, with potential foreign ownership limits rising to 49%, aiming to integrate nuclear energy into its industrial and transport sectors. This strategic pivot positions India as a leader in next-generation nuclear technology while supporting its carbon reduction goals and economic growth.
