India Secures Exclusive Rights to Explore Polymetallic Sulphides in Indian Ocean

In a groundbreaking achievement, India has secured exclusive rights to explore Polymetallic Sulphides (PMS) in a 10,000 sq km area of the Carlsberg Ridge within the Indian Ocean, becoming the first nation globally to hold two contracts with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for such exploration. This 15-year contract, announced by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, is a pivotal component of India’s Deep Ocean Mission, aimed at enhancing its maritime presence and advancing its Blue Economy initiatives. With valuable metals like gold and platinum found in PMS, India’s leadership in seabed resource exploration underscores its commitment to sustainable resource utilization and environmental protection. This milestone not only consolidates India’s strategic role in the Indian Ocean but also reflects its long-standing partnership with ISA, celebrating 30 years of collaboration in oceanic research.
