India Resumes Extradition to US After 17-Year Hiatus

India has resumed extradition proceedings with the United States after a 17-year gap, successfully sending Ganesh Shenoy, an Indian citizen accused of second-degree manslaughter, back to face charges related to a fatal crash in 2005. Shenoy allegedly fled to India after the incident in New York, where he is accused of driving recklessly and causing the death of Philip Mastropolo. The extradition is a significant move under the 1997 treaty between the two nations, reflecting strengthened legal cooperation and a commitment to addressing transnational crime. This development underscores India’s increasing engagement in global justice frameworks and enhances its image as a responsible partner in international law enforcement.
