India launches indigenous Martian regolith shield for habitat simulations.
India has made a significant entrance into global space exploration by debuting an indigenous Martian Regolith shield developed by Aaka Space and MiCoB. This innovative structure, crafted to mimic Martian soil, serves as both a load-bearing dome and radiation barrier, enabling realistic testing of microgreen growth under simulated Martian conditions. Complementing the habitat studies, a prototype Mars rover from IIT-Madras facilitated research on astronaut-robot interactions. The successful integration of various Indian institutions in this international analogue mission demonstrates India’s growing capabilities in space life sciences and technology, reinforcing its position as a key player in sustainable extraterrestrial habitat development and contributing to collaborative efforts for future Mars missions.
