India launches direct air cargo mission to Antarctica from Goa.

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) has successfully launched a direct air cargo flight from Goa to Antarctica, enhancing India’s logistical capabilities for polar expeditions. The mission, utilizing a DROMLAN-operated IL-76 aircraft, transported 18 tons of vital supplies, including scientific equipment and provisions for Indian research stations. This initiative, highlighted by NCPOR director Dr. Thamban Meloth, emphasizes India’s commitment to advancing Antarctic research and self-reliant logistics. The cargo will support ongoing studies in glaciology, oceanography, and climate at key research stations like Bharati and Maitri, marking a significant milestone in India’s scientific endeavors in the polar regions. This development underlines India’s strategic investment in scientific infrastructure and its role in global climate research.
