India inaugurates new consulate in Shanghai, enhancing bilateral ties after 32 years.
India inaugurated its new state-of-the-art Consulate General in Shanghai on December 7, 2025, at the Dawning Centre in Changning District, marking the first relocation in 32 years since 1993 and coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties with China. Spanning 1,436 sqm—over double the previous size—the facility was unveiled by Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat and Consul General Pratik Mathur, attended by 30 fellow consuls, Shanghai officials, and 500 Indian community members amid cultural performances showcasing “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.” From an Indian strategic viewpoint, the upgrade near Hongqiao hub bolsters consular efficiency, trade promotion in East China hubs like Yiwu, and people-to-people links via resumed direct flights, signaling pragmatic engagement amid border tensions to safeguard economic interests and diaspora security without compromising sovereignty. Full operations commence December 8.
