India aims for 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047 for energy sovereignty.
India is set to enhance its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047, expanding from the current 8.8 GW, as part of its commitment to clean energy and energy sovereignty. A dedicated inter-ministerial committee will oversee the implementation, focusing on financing, safety, and technology diversification, including indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors and international Pressurised Water Reactors. The initiative requires an estimated investment of 20 lakh crore and aims to bolster domestic uranium production while fostering international partnerships for fuel security. By integrating nuclear energy into India’s climate finance taxonomy, this roadmap not only supports the nation’s net-zero emissions goal by 2070 but also positions nuclear power as a crucial player in achieving sustainable energy independence.
