High Demand for Retired MiG-21 Airframes in India

As the Indian Air Force (IAF) prepares to retire its final MiG-21 squadron on September 26, 2025, there is significant interest from various institutions seeking to acquire these iconic aircraft for display purposes. The IAF follows a structured process for transferring airframes, prioritizing government institutions, while private entities must pay up to Rs 30 lakh. The MiG-21, which has been integral to India’s air defense for over six decades, is celebrated for its historical significance, having played crucial roles in conflicts like the 1971 Indo-Pak War and the Kargil War, thus cementing its legacy as a symbol of India’s military prowess and aviation heritage.
