India’s Gaganyaan program, aimed at sending astronauts into space, is progressing well, with the first uncrewed mission set for December 2023 and the inaugural crewed flight targeted for early 2027, according to ISRO Chairman V Narayanan. The program will utilize an AI-enabled half-humanoid robot named Vyommitra for the upcoming uncrewed mission, designed to simulate a crew environment and assess conditions such as temperature and pressure. Narayanan emphasized that Gaganyaan is crucial not only for human spaceflight but also for national development and scientific achievement, indicating preparations for future lunar missions, including India’s goal to send a crewed mission to the Moon by March 2027. The development of advanced propulsion systems, particularly a new 60-70 ton upper stage and hydrogen fuel technology, is integral to enhancing India’s capabilities in space exploration, positioning the nation among global leaders in this domain. The program’s success will also build on ISRO’s previous accomplishments, such as the Chandrayaan missions, and pave the way for further innovations in autonomous space operations.
