Delhi airport incident highlights need for improved safety protocols and navigation systems.
On November 23, 2025, at around noon, an Ariana Afghan Airlines Airbus A310 flight FG-311 from Kabul mistakenly landed on runway 29R at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport instead of the cleared runway 29L. Runway 29L was designated exclusively for landings, while 29R was being used for departures, and an Air India flight to Riyadh had just taken off from 29R at the time. The pilot reported losing the Instrument Landing System (ILS) signal approximately 4 nautical miles from the runway due to a failure of the ILS system after the Final Approach Fix in poor visibility conditions, which caused the aircraft to deviate right and land visually on the wrong runway. The pilot also stated that air traffic control did not inform them of the deviation during the approach. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident, while initial findings indicate no error on the part of air traffic control in giving clearance. The incident highlights the critical need to maintain rigorous safety protocols and reliable navigation systems at busy airports to prevent collisions and near-misses.
