Armed Cartels Fuel Myanmar's Meth Trade Threatening India

The drug trade from Myanmar continues to pose a serious threat to India’s national security, with nearly 90% of synthetic drugs entering India through the Mizoram border, according to recent intelligence. Armed cartels, supported by insurgent groups like the Chin National Army and other militias in Myanmar’s conflict zones, exploit the ongoing turmoil to smuggle large quantities of methamphetamine and other narcotics. The United Nations reported a record 236 tons of meth seized in East and Southeast Asia in 2024, marking a 24% increase from the previous year, with most production centered in Myanmar’s Shan State. This surge in drug trafficking fuels insurgency in India’s northeast and complicates law enforcement efforts. Recent seizures in Mizoram and Manipur, worth crores of rupees, highlight intensified operations against traffickers. The crisis calls for strategic collaboration between India and regional partners to address this growing transnational threat effectively.
