Indian Army plans pilot project to induct women into Territorial Army.

The Indian Army is considering a pilot project to induct women into Territorial Army battalions, a move aimed at enhancing opportunities for women in the armed forces. This initiative aligns with the government’s emphasis on ‘Nari Shakti’ and the evolving role of women in military operations. Currently, women are commissioned in various arms of the Indian Army, including the Corps of Engineers and the Army Air Defence, among others. The Territorial Army, established as a ‘citizen soldiers’ army’, offers a platform for able-bodied volunteers to serve, and currently comprises approximately 50,000 personnel. This proposed induction, initially limited to a few battalions, may pave the way for broader participation of women in the Territorial Army, reflecting a progressive step towards inclusivity in India’s defense forces.
