Army Chief General Dwivedi and wife commit to organ donation
Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife, Sunita Dwivedi, have pledged to donate their organs after death, exemplifying a commitment to service and compassion that extends beyond their military duties. This pledge was made during an event in New Delhi, where Gen. Dwivedi emphasized that such an act of organ donation underscores the army’s dedication to the welfare of society. He noted that India ranks second globally for organ transplants, with around 20,000 procedures conducted annually, and he urged youth and army officers to join this noble cause. The initiative aims to raise awareness about organ donation, which can save numerous lives, as organs from a single brain-dead donor can benefit up to eight individuals. Furthermore, updates in the National Organ Donation and Allocation Program will prioritize female patients and family members of donors, fostering a culture of organ donation in India. The event coincided with World Organ Donation Day, highlighting the critical need for donors in a country where many suffer due to a shortage of available organs. This campaign not only seeks to provide lifesaving solutions but also reinforces the ethos of sacrifice and service that is central to the Indian Armed Forces.
