US Navy Repositions Ships in Caribbean Ahead of Hurricane Melissa

As Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, threatened Jamaica with devastating winds and flooding, the U.S. Navy repositioned several vessels in the Caribbean to avoid the hurricane’s path while maintaining operational readiness amid ongoing counter-narcotics missions near Venezuela. The fleet includes the Iwo Jima Amphibious Readiness Group with over 4,500 sailors and Marines, alongside guided missile destroyers and cruisers. This naval maneuver also reflects U.S. pressure on Venezuela, where covert CIA and military actions have targeted drug trafficking vessels and sought to destabilize the Nicolás Maduro government. The operational shifts due to Melissa echo historical maritime prudence similar to Kublai Khan’s 13th-century fleets, which turned back to avoid damaging storms during invasions in 1274 and 1281, underscoring the interplay of nature and strategy in naval affairs. From an Indian viewpoint, this highlights the importance of maritime flexibility and resilience in volatile geopolitical zones, affirming the need for robust strategic partnerships to manage security threats aggravated by climate extremes and regional tensions.
