U.S. F-16 pilot ejects safely before jet crashes in California desert.

An F-16C Fighting Falcon from the U.S. Air Force’s elite Thunderbirds demonstration squadron crashed in the Southern California desert near Trona around 10:45 a.m. during a training mission. The pilot successfully ejected and was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders from the San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived to manage the aircraft emergency, as the jet exploded on impact, sending a large plume of black smoke into the sky. This incident is currently under investigation by the 57th Wing Public Affairs Office, with further details pending. The crash echoes a previous tragic event in the same area in 2022, where a Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed, resulting in the pilot’s death, highlighting the inherent risks associated with high-performance jet training in challenging terrains. Moreover, while the Thunderbirds maintain rigorous safety protocols, such incidents underline the operational challenges faced by advanced fighter aircraft during training missions.
